04:38 pm - Quick reminder
I'll be reposting blurbs to remind those of you who've seen this already as well as introducing it to those whose Flists push posts down quickly (I know mine does).

I'm in a "mutual follow" relationship with Tony and Clare of Just a Moment Cross Stitch Designs in the UK and will be placing an order with them this month. Because I don't have enough local business for X-Stitch Xpress just yet, I'm extending the opportunity to order some of these great charts (Mystic Mog and those lovely biscornus are my favorites) through me, saving you overseas shipping. :)

If you're a US stitcher or you love someone who is, take a look through Just a Moment Cross Stitch Designs and see if anything tugs at your heart. Drop me a line here in the comments or by email to xstitch (dot) xpress (at) gmail (dot) com. Tony and Clare say that if I fax the order in they'll likely have it out in the post (now that theirs is no longer on strike) the next day at the latest, so you'll DEFINITELY get them in time for the holidays!

Don't worry about the currency conversion unless you want to -- I can figure it out along with normal US postage and let you know what the total will be. Once I have the funds deposited, the order goes out -- but to be fair to those who've already indicated they wish to order, I'm imposing a "no later than" deadline of 11/17/09.

Thanks for reading along!

09:58 am - Monday Mondays
As I said much more briefly in my latest Facebook update, I have a huge cup of hot coffee and classical Minnesota Public Radio -- in time for Performance Today, no less. Contentment abounds.

I'd link you to my coffee too, but alas, no one is actually selling Spark Roast yet and that's what I'd prefer to be drinking (who wouldn't?). As yet another hat tip to Girl Genius Online, Agatha finally decked Princess Pinkie, who's been manipulating Gil (the perpetual rescuer) for all he's worth. :) I'm rooting for you, Agatha! What did you do with your Death Ray, anyway??

I don't have much to say here today. It was a quiet weekend. I survived "Death by Inlaws" on Saturday in pretty good spirits -- my younger son (TiggerKid) called me with a "Get Out of Jail Free" card (his words!) that allowed me not to have to stay for very long after the meal itself was over. He so rocks -- I have found I like my sons much better now that they're grown men. :) I always loved them, but actually liking them wasn't much of an option when they were boys and teens, I'm afraid. I still can't take more than a few hours of their company without getting restless, but hell, that's true of most people I know.

Except for [info]little_wren82! Who's coming to visit in September! For OVER A WEEK!! YAY! *flailing muppet arms* I'm so stoked. And because we know each other so well I will build some private time into the visit for both of us. :-D In addition to a Medford road trip... and I think a picnic in the redwoods someplace where we can relax in the warmth (not heat!), stitch, and just enjoy each other's company. Also a few hours to pick out the woods she wants her floorstand built from. Not sure what else yet, I'm sure we'll come up with lots of somethings.

Sunday... was TiggerKid's 21st birthday, though he's coming down for dinner tonight to celebrate. He always wants my fried chicken for his birthday. *shrug* At least he's easy to please that way. The rest of yesterday was spent tending the roses and herbs out front and playing with my new software, KXStitch, which allows me to create cross stitch patterns from scratch, or convert images into same. I started with that Spark Roast panel (did you click on the link?) and got a preliminary version I really like. I intend to play with it a bit before I actually try stitching it -- just the utter JOY of having some Girl Genius stuff to stitch gave me giddy shivers all day yesterday. :)

My body clock is confused. Either that or I'm moving into that "older people don't need much sleep" stage of my life already. I'm wide awake at my formerly usual bedtime, staying up 'til after midnight, and really not sleeping in all that much later (like 9am or so, usually). *shrug* If it continues I will start putting the time to good use -- probably stitching. ;)

This week? I'll schedule that interview with Elaine from the McKinleyville Press and see what else I can do to contact some stitchers in the local area. :) I still have inventory to finish cataloging and I'd like to get more progress on the BoINK before August 1st and the sixth block is released. Other than that? :) Who knows? One think I enjoy about my life is its occasional spontaneity -- lots of room for God to move!

08:13 pm - Apropos of nothing much...
... just wastin' my time and likely yours, if you insist on reading along.
  • I harvested lettuce leaves and nasturtium leaves and flowers to augment our dinner salad this evening. You have to pick the nasturtium leaves when they're still smaller than a quarter, they have a light, crispy texture and mildly peppery flavor.

  • I like having sunlight in our backyard again. I may have mentioned this before.

  • Framboise Lambic is A Very Tasty Thing to drink. I wish I had some now.

  • After the Subaru passes its smog test tomorrow (this is me using the power of positive thinking here) we will officially be a 3 vehicle family. Hereafter known as Scooby-Do, the new addition got 23 mpg on its first tank of gas since it was put back on the road, which bodes well; Maggie May got about that on her first tank too, as I recall, and it kept getting better and better as time went along. I figure Scooby will pay for itself (registration and repairs) before the end of 2009 in saved fuel costs alone.

    • Lazarus (the truck) will now only be used when M needs his tools at the other end of the trip. Scooby-Do is officially his work car and I'll be using it from time to time as needed for its all-wheel drive.

  • http://xstitcher.webs.com/apps/blog/ -- the link for X-Stitch Xpress's new business blog, if you're interested in following along. I've been chronicling some of the start up process for the business recently but I anticipate I'll be using it to announce additions to inventory, new ideas for product, changes to my routes, etc. Or whatever else strikes my fancy. :)

  • Has anyone else noticed how the third Pirates of the Caribbean movie ("At World's End") pretty much prophesied the attitudes that led to the collapse of the financial sector (and thus our economy) here in 2008/09? There's a direct parallel between Lord Cutler Beckett and some of the "captains of industry" I've seen getting their pee-pees whacked in hearings before the congress...

    • They were all selfish, greedy psychopaths. But the pirates, in the movie at least, were honest about being selfish greedy psychopaths. And in the end, it was the pirates who made choices for the good of the whole rather than their own selfish (or corporate) interests. You couldn't say that about Cutler Beckett. Or John Thain, for that matter.

    • Yeah yeah. It's "fiction," I know. Got it.

    • But then again, "credit default swaps." Speaking of fictions, and other not-true things.

  • Anyway... I haven't cross-stitched since the BoINK debacle. I had intended to do some stitching over the weekend, but that didn't happen. Note to self: don't use the weed whacker and THEN load and stack green firewood unless you want your hands to tremble every time they grasp something for 24 to 48 hours.

Cross stitching sounds kinda good right now. Later, folks.

07:06 pm - Plans change.
It's a fact of life. If you've lived long enough, you learn to expect them to do just that.

Rather than try to do a lot of river-pushing to get the camping trip to Twin Lakes to come together for this weekend, we're heading over to East Fork instead. M & I are kinda bummed about it, but think it will be best for overall enjoyment. Right now the Subaru isn't anywhere near ready (registration, muffler, catalytic converter -- and a MAJOR cleaning just the first things needing to be done) and we're still missing some gear we'd need to pull off four days in a primitive camp.

We've set our sights on the July 4th holiday weekend for the trip to Twin Lakes. For his birthday weekend, East Fork will do. :) It's known, it's easy, the Camry will make the trip, and Anni and I may go over on Thursday just to spend the night by ourselves. I still haven't made up my mind on that yet -- I may need Thursday to finish checking our gear and packing.

On a personal note, I'm mulling over what cross stitch to take. :) Maybe Lavender, maybe more fob/biscornu stuffs? Oh, Dragon Game, for sure -- he definitely could be finished in a weekend. I'll definitely be packing it all in with the Craft Tote of Fabulosity, an LSBags original. (Pssst! Lea's got more bags up, if you haven't been by recently. She also does custom orders, so let her know what you want -- and could you ask for a more reasonable price? w0ot!)

Anyway, I don't want to take anything too involved, but the prospect of sitting by that gurgling creek in the middle of a mountain wilderness while stitching lovely things is just too tempting to pass up.

*deep breath* I probably won't be around much 'til we get back -- LOTS to do to get this show on the road, literally!

At last, after a week of gloomy grey clouds, we have an afternoon of pure, glorious sunshine!!

Was loving it, out in my sport bra and sarong (tied as a skirt), planting my new herb babies.

A strange tale of making the best of a weird situation below the cut. )

02:41 pm - Gridding
*le sigh*

18" x 26" is a BUTTLOAD of fabric to grid...

...and yes I know I could just grid "a page at a time." Theoretically, that's true. In practice, once this project goes on the bars it's not coming off unless there's a catastrophe or until it's finished.

So. Gridding. All of it at once. The dark, ugly underbelly of cross stitch... :(

ETA: Guess I should add that I also tried to mat and frame hubby's holiday gift. Yeah, from LAST year's holidays. :( I ruined the extra matting, so he's just stuck with the one that came with the frame. For now. It looks... okay, I guess... For now. I want to get it to someone who can do a better job than I did, though. Soonest.

/bitchfest

The one good thing that happened today was that I got the rest of my xstitch stuff into/onto/around my new little "craft area" in the living room. :) I still don't have the storage things I want, but what I've got there will do. For now. *grin*

Still... is a chocolate day, for realz.

11:18 am - Possible road trip!
Hubby's got itchy feet again (well, chronically actually, but it seems to be worse than usual) (and no, I don't mean athlete's foot!) so I think we're gonna carve a few bucks out of our too-tight-to-mention budget and head off for a day trip tomorrow.

I mention this mostly because I plan to take my LS Original Tote Bag of Fabulosity with me. :-D

I packed it up yesterday with the Lavender project from that same page and took off for a local yarn shop called Handmade Memories. It's the closest thing I have to an LNS. The ladies in there are so nice, they said I could bring my stitching in and sit with them while they knitted/crocheted, so yesterday I did. Bonus is, most of them used to cross stitch or do still and have just set it aside recently. My work on Lavender (plus my raving about Bubble Telescope) convinced a couple of them that maybe it would be cool to pick their own UFO's back up again. Yay!

But anyway, the bag: God it was wonderful. After getting all my project stuff in for Lavender I tossed my purse in there too and took off. For stops at stores I just grabbed my purse and ran, terribly convenient! I fastened my keys to the carabiner (sp?) that she used to give me a water bottle holder. It was so easy to access my stitchy stuffs when I sat down -- I adore the way the top of the bag widens up, I can get both hands/arms in there to pull stuff out when I need to. And no worries about not having a side flap for charts, honey -- there are other ways to secure those things. It would have been nice, but definitely wasn't necessary. The deep interior pocket for the fabric/project was awesome though!

So yeah, I'll be carrying it tomorrow on my trip. I'm out of the habit of carrying big bags as purses, but this one is so gorgeous I'm sure I'll remember fairly quickly!

11:22 am - Sick Day
I wish I could say I'm overdue for a sick day, but I doubt it's the case. LOTS of physical challenges this year, probably the most since I had the staph aureus infection in my leg a couple of years ago. At least I can be pretty sure it's not swine flu, the pandemic du jour. Just a run-down feeling that turned into a sore throat last night. Still have a little of both - thank goodness for Gypsy Cold Care tea and Emergen-C.

Some notes:

  • I pruned back my lemon balm on Sunday and infused the trimmings for a beautiful tea. I don't know whether the slightly bitter aftertaste is from my sick, or what.

  • I'm curled up under a blanket today, sipping tea and stitching. "Lavender" is the project of choice

  • Of course I'm also intermittently checking in with the BB - my ability to focus is kinda weak today.

  • Headache. Did I mention "headache" as one of my symptoms? I should have.

  • I don't have any music playing. Passing strange...

  • The fabric I ordered from Silkweavers before I left for vacation didn't ship until YESTERDAY. *grump* They're in FL so it'll probably be another week before it arrives.

  • On a brighter note, the craft tote bag [info]nelle816 made for me should be in the mailbox today! I am eager to lay hands on it after seeing pics of the one she made for [info]dancing_ashes.

Gonna stitch more now, I think.

ETA: The bag was indeed in my mailbox. Pics to follow shortly -- OMG it's so fabulous!

10:09 am - Edited: Just... wow.
(Change of plans for today, sudden and abrupt, but believe me, I've grown accustomed to such things over the years)

I love my new hair. I sometimes wish the man who does it for me would go public with it, but he seems happy keeping it to "just family/friends" for now. He is amazing, an artist in many senses of that word. M may have noticed, or not, but he hasn't said anything yet. Circumstantial thing, it's okay (for now) -- but I hope he likes it too. And remembers to say, either way.

I'll try to get a pic while I'm out today. :) It's sparkly-shiny-awesome in daylight.

I'm in the midst of preparations for the Xstitch vacation retreat again: Today is LAUNDRY, rather than my spree in town for my car (because, if my baby speaks up and says he needs me close, I'm stayin'. Case closed).

Tomorrow is taking the car down to scrub it, vacuum it, and get the oil changed in town. A stop at Michael's for another floss storage box and some LoRan floss storage cards. I picked up a huge zippered project binder for taking my projects with me this weekend -- I got this idea from [info]littleblueghost and it seems a spiffy way to carry all the bells and whistles one needs to stitch on the road in one contained, secure place. The LoRan cards are three-hole punched and will fit in a binder. Each card holds ten different flosses. I hope Michael's carries them.

Got my perfume oil blended this morning. I had almost run out and needed a new base carrier oil, so I picked up some of that yesterday after my hair beautification experience. :) The new carrier oil is lighter than the oil I used to use, plus is completely fragrance free. The raw mix smelled pretty -- hopefully the "secret step" will cause it to fall into utter, complete harmony with itself, which is when I know I've got it right.

I also splurged on a bit of Pantene mousse for my new hair -- I need one that isn't going to dry out my already dry, tormented ends. :( But which will also support a bit of a sassy wave, which this does. ;) So -- blow dryer goes on the packing list!

I've got a grocery stop to make to lay in supplies for my man while I'm gone. :) I'll also have to fire up the bread machine for another couple loaves of bread, or remind him to do it after I leave.

kk, I've frittered away most of the morning. Time to get my butt in gear -- for LAUNDRY. *grin* Plus side bonus -- he says he'll help me wash/vacuum my car, so he rocks.

I required myself (somewhat forcibly, actually) to pick this Storykeep back up today so I could finish the first two blocks. There was only an irrational one -- I was feeling completely out of my depth stitching on my first real HAED. *sheepish grin*

10:12 am - Xstitch ToDo List
Which I shall promptly copy into my Crackberry's task list app, I'm sure.

Thanks, [info]sterlingirl.

These are mostly MAJOR works. I tend to pick up smaller projects spontaneously to give myself a break from the grind of completing the larger works.

  • Bubble Telescope. The hold up on this one is funds for materials -- prolly close to $100 and money's been too tight to mention this year so far. Plus, scroll bars long enough to hold 30" of fabric...

  • Growth Rings, the newest rage by Tracy Horner, she of Ink Circles fame. Unfortunately it's only available through Just Cross Stitch magazine -- back issue, now. I actually am closer to starting this than BT if only because I already have the fabric and only need to buy floss -- so of course, I want to stitch it in silk overdyes...

  • Cirque de Circles. I do intend to do this, probably after BoINK is done and after BT is started. No idea on fabric or floss choices yet, it's still percolating.

  • At least one project for my Gift Meme thing. Possibly two but I can't list them here for obvious reasons.

  • A Whole Lotta Latté -- for the ultra hip ladies at Sutter's Mudd, our favorite local coffee kiosk in McKinleyville, CA. :)

It's highly unusual for me to spend a day in town goofing off, doing what I want to do when I want to do it without really having to answer to anyone else for it. But today, that's just what I did.

06:37 pm - Hummingbird Bellpull -- Stitch Complete! :)
Some of you may remember I started this piece (from the most recent issue of Just Cross Stitch) when my husband completed the prototype of the floor stand he's building for me, as a way to test it out. Oh boy did it ever get tested! :) Confetti stitches and some frogging made sure that upper arm got used and abused as I worked on the piece.

Flutterbirds behind the cut )

This was a very fast stitch, really. I'm glad I did it on the tea-dyed fabric, the golden hue made those greens just POP. :) Artistic deviations? Oh yeah. I got into the first hummingbird and discovered that I somehow had no DMC 700, so I substituted one strand of 699 blended with one strand of 701. *grin* Also I didn't have two of the three reds, so I substituted 600, 601, and 603 which I've used on other hummingbird patterns.

This will be finished as a bellpull and sent to my mother, who lives 2800 miles away and someone I don't get to talk/spend time with nearly enough. I miss her a lot and I wish I could have someone be there with a camera when she opens the box. ;)

11:58 am - We just move on... We just move on.
I've had songs from Chicago (the 2002 movie version) running through my head since we re-rented the DVD over the weekend. Now I know why I don't play the soundtrack CD more often -- some of those tunes are bastardy earworms, they are. It's pretty sweet (and by sweet, I mean "hot") to remember Queen Latifah vamping it up in "When You're Good to Mama," but I can take or leave most of Rene Zellwegger -- and it's regrettably HER voice that gets stuck in my head most often.

I also rented Hero and The Three Musketeers version with Sheen, Sutherland, Platt, O'Donnell -- but primarily for Tim Curry as Richelieu and Rebecca De Mornay as Milady. :) The latter two were pretty convincing in their roles, which you couldn't really say for the actors playing musketeers. Oliver Platt was funny as Porthos but I don't know that this makes him "convincing." Hero is a perennial favorite here too -- I can't say enough good things about it (especially since this is a personal post and not a film review!). I do wish American filmmakers would take notes from it, though. The depth and beauty... almost matchless in Hollywood.

Yesterday was my last official shift with MH. She asked me to stay, turned on the tears at the end. She must think I'm pretty gullible though, because she was on the phone talking trash about me to one of her friends right after I got there. *shaking head* I really didn't need any validation about my decision to quit, but if I had, that would have cinched it right there.

I've got the phone number of a service in Eureka which matches care providers with clients and it's my intention to call them at the end of the week. I find I really enjoy caregiving as a profession -- I just require a modicum of respect from the clients for whom I'm working.

Today I slept late, had coffee and breakfast, surfed the web a bit. I intend to catch up on dishes and laundry this afternoon and spend the distaff moments stitching. The Hummingbird Bellpull for my mother is almost stitch-complete, probably will be finished tonight or tomorrow. At which point I'm at something of a loss because the only other biggish project I've got ongoing is BoINK, and the next block doesn't get released until April 1st. I guess I'll start my Dolly Mama's project, stitching "Big Girl Panties" on a long sleeved white tee. That'll keep me preoccupied until the $$ come in to buy the materials for Bubble Telescope, or so I hope.

I guess I could look at the material list for the Alesia's Cross Storykeep... but I'm pretty sure I don't have all the blues needed for that one. :) Nor an evenweave piece big enough, come to think on it.

On a related note: If anyone wants to sign me up for Silkweaver's Fabric of the Month Club as like an early birthday gift or something, that would be mighty fine. I prefer evenweaves in medium-ish sizes... ;)

Oh! Happy St. Patrick's Day!

And:
Happy Birthday (tomorrow) RWBADGER!

01:15 pm - [info]janlynncorp comes through!
I know I wasn't the only outraged stitcher to send them a complaint, but I want to post their swift response here. I'm really amazed!

At the beginning of the year I approved an SEO specialist to buy up domain names related to our industry and link them to us. This was intended to provide us relevant links so people can learn more about Janlynn and find us much easier.

123stitch.com is a fantastic site and a wonderful customer of Janlynn’s. We had no intention to trade on their good name online or otherwise and have made it now abundantly clear to our SEO specialist to only buy names that do not infringe on other people’s businesses online.

This is rather embarrassing for us at Janlynn to be sure. This is coming to our attention today as a result of your posts here -- and we thank you for them! As you may have seen ... we have already turned off this domains redirect.

Certainly we will turn over 123stitch.net to our wonderful friends Jim and Joanne for NO COST … with our sincere apologies that this has happened (I have a call and an email into Jim already). It was absolutely our fault for overlooking this on the list of names that we were provided by our SEO firm to register -- we cannot escape blame for this oversight ... we can only offer our apologies to you all and especially to Jim and Joanne, whom we adore for the wonderful work they have done in our industry.

Please keep frequenting 123Stitch.com for their message board, their wonderful selection of craft products, and their tremendous customer service!!

09:11 am - In support of 123Stitch.COM
The stitchers who read this journal also read the [info]cross_stitch community blog, but if any of you want an alternate text to draw from for an email to Jannlynn, feel free. Here's mine:

I have purchased several Jannlynn products in the past and have recommended them to friends from time to time. However, I find myself compelled to state that if Jannlynn doesn't change it's domain name as soon as possible I won't ever be purchasing, or recommending, another.

From installing and maintaining websites I know there is no way you or your webmaster could have obtained the 123stitch.NET domain without realizing that there was already a 123stitch.COM -- an online shop which has superior customer service and which is widely favored among needleworkers in general. In searches for product their site routinely comes up close to the top, which helps them stay in business. When those stitchers who aren't as computer savvy simply type "123stitch" into the location bar on their browser, it's always sent them to their favorite online needlework store by default -- 123stitch.COM. Now that may no longer be the case. Jannlynn is going to leech off some of that business simply by copying the name of a popular web domain.

It's certainly legal enough. And yes, 123stitch.COM should certainly have purchased all related domains to protect themselves. However, for Jannlynn, a much larger corporation, to thieve off of a smaller company's back like that for online business is not only distasteful, it's entirely unethical in my view and until/unless this situation changes, Jannlynn won't profit from my business or my recommendations.

In this era of corporate greed and irresponsibility, I do hope Jannlynn does the right thing here.

Sincerely,

Rev. Alesia Matson, D.D.
